Tyrolean Figural Chess Set, 20th century

A figural chess set presumably made in Tyrol, Austria in the second half of the 20th century. The pieces with a king size of 11.5 cm were made from pine wood in the traditional folk art style typical for the carving tradition of the Alp Mountains. One side natural, the other side stained in brown. The white pieces as a royal court with mounted warhorses as knights and soldiers armed with rifles as bishops and pawns. The black side with royal king and queen, but the rest of the pieces as wilders armed with spears and clubs. A very unusual, but also very attractive feature of this set are the elephant rooks with long tusks and a turret on their back. All pieces on circular pedestals.
