A chess set in the Régence style with a king size of 8.9 cm. The white pieces are turned from ivory, the black pieces from ebony. Judging by the exquisite carving style, the set was probably made in Dieppe, France. While Régence sets were made in France as early as the 18th century, their style evolved over time. The style of the rooks with a spindle finial on top as well as the very detailed carving of the knights' heads are typical for later sets, which makes me believe that this set dates to mid-19th century.
