English Travel Chess Set, St. George Pattern, 1850-1900
Beautiful English travel chess set with pegged pieces turned from boxwood and rosewood with a beautiful patina. The pieces were made in the St. George pattern most likely from the second half of the 19th century. The Kings with ribbed crowns and ball finials, the Queens with large bulb top finials, the Bishops with split mitres, Knights as carved horses' heads, Rooks with four crenellations, Pawns with bulb top finials. King size is 62 mm.
The set comes in a lovely folding chess board from the same period with holes fitting to the pegs of the pieces, holding the pieces in place. The board is made from solid walnut with a decorative plaque on top, probably made of silver. The playing surface is inlaid with birch satin for the white squares and either rosewood or ebony for the dark squares. The board itself also shows a very rich dark patina.
The set evokes images of distinguished English gentlemen and ladies of the 19th century travelling across the Atlantic on clippers or steam boats or embarking on train rides through an English scenery.
