An interesting and unusual chess set, one side made of boxwood, the other side made of a darker wood with clearly visible grain, probably walnut. I have no information on this set whatsoever, but it was probably made in Germany in the early 20th century. The pieces are covered on the underside with an almost paperlike thin felt in a faded green, which I have seen on several sets from the 1910's and 1920's.
The kings have a height of 11 cm and do not have a cross finial but rather some tiered turned disks resembling a blossom. Queens with a drop finial. The rooks with overhanging crenellated top resembling those typical for chess sets from South Germany or Austria. The knights cut from flat wood in the shape of horses' heads. The bishops with thin mitre cuts. The pawns with unusually wide bases, which make the pawns almost as tall as wide (39mm diameter, 44 mm height), thus slightly reminding in shape of the pawns in German Knubbel sets.
