English Club Chess Set, "St. George" Pattern, ca. 1870-1880
Antique English "St. George" pattern chess set in club size following the design introduced by the St. George Chess Club in London in the late 18th century. King size is 4".
The pieces are made from ebony and boxwood. Elongated hemispherical bases with a thick foot rim, which were probably meant to accomodate lead weight. However, the pieces are not weighted.
The Kings with double collar and imposing head with a large bulb finial, the Queens with oversize bulb tops, mitred Bishops and the Rooks with six crenellations. Probably made around 1870 - 1880.
