"Harlequin" Metal Chess Set, presumably made in England in the 20th century. The pieces are made of metal, one side probably pewter, the other probably brass. The pieces have a very classical design. The Kings with hoop crown or arched crown (faislum), the Queens with open crowns, the Rooks with brickwork and four crenellations, the Knights as horses' heads on sturdy pedestals, the Bishops of stout shape with mitres, the Pawns as circular knobs and of very small size in comparison to the rest of the pieces. King size is 3". Due to the material the pieces have a very heavy weight. As the pieces are slightly tarnished by age, the sides are a bit difficult to distinguish. Apart from that they are well playable.
The position in the last pictures is from Van Vliet vs. Nimzowitsch, Oostende 1907.
