English Ivory Chess Set, Charles Hastilow, ca. 1850
Mid 19th century ivory chess set, presumably from the Charles Hastilow workshop. White pieces in natural ivory, the other side stained in red. The Kings have a Maltese cross, the Queens came with a Fleur de Lys finial. King size is 10 cm.
Despite the delicate carvings especially on the Kings and Queens, the pieces are rather massive and heavy, a very nice haptic experience holding them in your hand.
