Here is a very large and very heavy antique German games box made with beautiful walnut burlwood inlays and an ornamented brass clasp. According to the previous owner, it was made in the south of Germany and dates to ca. 1860. The box has a chess board on one side and a nine-men morris on the other. On the inside is a backgammon board. The dimensions of the box are 45 x 45 x 13.5 cm, the chess board has a size of 36 x 36 cm with individual squares of 4.5 cm. The weight of the box is 8.5 kg.
I had the finish of the box restored by a professional restorer, who restored the original shellac polish followed by several layers of hard wax, which emphasised the beauty of the burl grain.
