Staunton type chess set made from buffalo horn, most likely of German origin. King size is 110 mm or 4 1/3". Buffalo horn is a nice material for chess sets. It combines an attractive feel with a pleasant weight. The Queens have bulbous tops, which are very distinct. The Knights are carved as extremely elegant horses' heads with twisted pointy ears and glass eyes.
The auction house which sold the set to me carefully estimated this set to be from the second half of the 20th century. However, I have seen specimen of the same type which were from the 1910's. The style definitely fits to an early 20th century period. Further, another seller has suggested that this set was probably made by Uhlig. I find this rather doubtful as none of the pieces resembles a typical Uhlig design. The early 20th century Uhlig catalogue does list chess sets made of horn, but neither are they shown in this particular design nor were they offered in this size.
