Uhlig Staunton Metal Chess Set, first half 20th century
Uhlig Staunton Metal Chess Set, first half 20th century
An unsual metal chess set made in the Uhlig style. The pieces are made of what I believe is zync cast. They are finished with some red and ivory white lacquer. The king size is 65 mm. The design of the pieces strongly resembles the sets made by K.P.Uhlig in the early 20th century. However, I have never before seen that Uhlig also produced metal sets. Either this was an attempt to produce something comparable to the William Britain lead chessmen or it was the work of an individual collector or player to reproduce an "outdoor" version of an Uhlig style set. In any case this is a very unique set.
