Very large and heavy Victorian board-box, dating to around 1880. The entire frame including the two storage boxes are made from a tropical hardwood, which might be mahogany. The board itself has some wonderful inlays made from boxwood, rosewood and some sort of fruitwood. The overall size is 520 x 520 mm. The board has a rather large rim, i.e. the playing size is significantly smaller compared to the overall size with 304 x 304 mm and individual squares of 38 x 38 mm.
There are some scratches in the surface and the baseplate has moved off a bit, causing a deep crack going right through the middle of the board. Nevertheless, the board is a real gem in my collection. Shown below with an early 19th century ivory set made by Thomas Lund.
