Uhlig Staunton Chess Set, Nr. 133, Size 0, 1910-1930
Uhlig Staunton Chess Set, Nr. 133, Size 0, 1910-1930
This set fills a gap in my Uhlig collection, because it is the second smallest Uhlig set of this type, a no. 133 size 0 with a king size of 62 mm, ca. 1920's. Pieces are made of bone, one side natural, the other stained red.
This is a very rare set, not so much because of the size, but because it came in an original Uhlig box. I have already seen a couple of Uhlig sets, but this is the first with its original container. According to my Uhlig catalogue, these sets came "in poliertem Klappkasten", which means "in a polished folding box". The box is not specifically marked, but I am convinced that this is an original, because it has some features that are distinctive for Uhlig. Attached on the front of the lid are two metal rings, which move into a small open space carved into the front part in a way that half of the ring is on the outside, which then allows two hooks to slide into it and firmly lock the lid. When opened, the front part can be folded to the front, so that you can take out the two trays on top of each other containing the white and red pieces. This type of box for chess pieces is not pictured in the catalogue, but there is a picture of a box with an identical locking and folding mechanism used for Dominos. I think this is enough evidence for me to assume that the box is original.
