A rare Soviet Staunton Set worthy of being a museum exhibit, as the pieces are made of bovine bone, a material not often seen in Soviet sets. One side natural, the other side stained black. Slender pieces with typical Soviet shapes and excellent carvings on the Knights. The set came in a box full of articles and snips from various Soviet newspapers and chess magazines in Russian language from the 1930's to 50's, most of them bearing some sort of reference to Mikhail Botvinnik, as well as some handwritten notes, some of them by their dates going back to 1926/1927. This led me to the conclusion that the set probably dates back to the period 1920 to1950. King size is 75 mm.
