English chess set sold under the brand "The Rose Chess". The pieces are made of lead, one side painted black, the other side painted red. The pieces are based on the Staunton design, but are flat with slightly broader bases and supports to allow for stable standing. This particular design was patented on 24 April 1941 by Mrs Mildred Rose of Rofant Road, Northwood, Middlesex. A picture of the patent is shown below.
According to the "schaak-museum.nl"-website by Joost Van Reij, the set came in 3 different sizes and variations, in boxes of 3 sizes, labels in 3 variants and 2 different patent numbers. Further information can also be found in "Chessmen - Art and History" by Mathieu & Ine Kloprogge, p. 288 et. seq.
I currently have two "The Rose Chess" sets. The first one is a large set with a King size of 2.5". It came in a large box (17.5 x 11.5 x 3.5 cm) with the label being inscribed with "The Rose Chess" and "Prov. Pat.No 5280". Underneath it says "Made in England" and "No. 1 Set". All pieces are marked with "Made in England" on the underside.
The second set is smaller with a King size of 2". It came in a small box (10.8 x 7.1 x 3.4 cm) with the label being inscribed with "The Rose" and "Chess" in two straight lines and "Patent No. 546516" underneath. Some of the pieces are marked with "Rose" and the red King is stamped with "2" on the underside.
