English Ivory Chess Set, "St. George" Pattern, Calvert, ca. 1830
An ivory chess set by Dorothy Calvert, England, circa 1830, with the rare Calvert stamp on the white rooks. One side stained red, the other side left natural. The king with an urn-shaped top typical for the Calvert workshop. Kings and queens with multi-baluster knops, bishops as mitres, knights as finely carved horses' heads, rooks as monobloc turrets, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials. The size of the king is 9 cm.
The white rooks are stamped "CALVERT 189 FLEET STT".
John Calvert was a renowned ivory & hardwood turner. His workshop was located in London under the address 189 Fleet Street, where he was working from 1791 until his death in 1822. After his death, the Calvert business was then being run by his widow Dorothy until her death in 1840.
