English chess set in the Staunton design. The King size is 3.5". All pieces are weighted. The white pieces are made of boxwood and have developed a beautiful patina. The black pieces are made of ebony. Some of the design features that catch the eye in this set are the large, round heads of the kings, the rooks with five crenellations, the rather rounded heads of the bishops and the very individual design of the knights, which are somewhat reminiscent of knights from the workshop of Richard Whitty in Liverpool. I would approximately date this set to 1880.
