While the Political Coffee House chess set
was a secular version of the Modern Coffee House chess set, which rid itself, inter alia, from the crosses on the kings following the communist agenda of the time, some privately produced sets retained the clerical symbolism no longer wanted by the government regime, hence I labelled this set the Romanian "Clerical" chess set. The design evolved in the 1980's, even though the actual set shown on the pictures was likely produced in the 2000's.
The kings have large crosses, the queens spear heads reminiscent of the former coffee house sets. One thing immediately noticeable is the size of the pawns, which are almost of similar size than the rooks and knights.
The pieces are made of light wood (probably some sort of pine) and covered with clear lacquer for the white pieces and a black lacquer for the black pieces. The set came with a beautifully ornamented and lacquered folding board.
