A German chess set in the Staunton pattern made of horn with a king height of 8.5 cm, probably dating to the period of 1960-1980. Chess sets made of buffalo horn were rather popular in Germany in the second half of the 20th century. Many manufacturers and dealers included such sets in their range. Horn sets were generally the luxury variant in the range and fetched significantly higher prices than conventional wooden sets. The manufacturer of the set shown here is not known, but it is an example from the upper price segment. The pieces came in a green leatherette box with two compartmented trays lined with red velvet.
