Master Pieces, Gareth Williams, 160 p.
The book has the subtitle "The story of chess: the pieces, players and passion of 1,000 years", and that is exactly what this book is about. A concise and at the same time very comprehensive overview on the development of chess pieces. The author, Gareth Williams, is a chess heavy weight, experienced tournament and club player, founder member of Chess Collectors International (CCI) and CCI's Vice President in 1984, principal organizer of the London Chess Congress in 1986 and in the same year Exhibits Co-Ordinator of the 1986 World Chess Championship match between Karpov and Kasparov held in London. As a long time curator of the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum he had an immediate access to some of the finest chess sets in the world, including some of the Lewis Chessmen. Over the years, he built up a very fine and distinguished collection himself, of which I managed to obtain an 18th century English playing set.
