Schachpartie durch Zeiten und Welten, Hans & Barbara Holländer, 368 p.
The book was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Schachpartie durch Zeiten und Welten", which translates to "Chess game through times and worlds" and which was set up from 5 May to 28 August 2005 in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg/Germany to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Hamburg Chess Club of 1830. The exhibition comprised exhibits from not less than 27 European museums and art galleries as well as from 16 private collectors. Two of these collectors, who have always played a very active role in chess collecting in Germany, in particular in the German chapter of CCI, were Hans & Barbara Holländer, who also created the concept and design for the book.
Hans Holländer, born in Hamburg, spent a considerable part of his professional life (1971 - 1997) as a professor of art history at the Technical University in Aachen. His wife Barbara is an experienced and renowned art historian as well. Both were mad about chess all their life. Hans Holländer passed away in April 2017.
The exhibition catalogue is offering both, rich illustrations of some of the most beautiful chess sets in the world as well as an enormous amount of background information on the history of chess and of chess pieces. The book was published in German language only, but is a "must" for all serious chess collectors. You will hardly find a book with more high quality photographs and illustrations of historical chess sets and chess art.
