An impressive chess set in the Staunton pattern made by an English artist in the second half of the 19th century, probably between 1860 and 1890. The pieces are made of high quality ivory, one side natural the other stained red. The kings have a size of 11.3 cm or 4.5" and a weight of 91 g. The knights have a very peculiar and attractive shape. Rooks and knights with king side markings. The set came with its original fitted box, which is most likely the reason why all pieces are in almost pristine condition. A similar set without box made by the same maker was sold at Christie's in an auction on 20 September 2000.
